How to Making Simple Compost
Prepare a bucket
Fill the bucket with soil as a base layer
followed by brown trash
on top again add green trash
covered with brown trash again
then flush with rice washing water or EM4
Do it like that continuously until full and wait 2 weeks
If too wet add green trash
If it's too dry, flush with rice washing water

Making Compost by Aerobic Method


Making compost using the aerobic method is carried out with the help of air circulation (oxygen), so the process is often carried out in an open environment.


To make compost using the aerobic method, care must be taken that the ratio of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) < 30:1, water content of 40-50% and a pH of around 6-8.


Examples of the types of materials used are leguminous forage, straw, banana stems and poultry manure. However, if the compost lacks carbon, rice husk charcoal can be added.


Here's how you can make compost in your home:


  1. Use about 10 square meters of land for composting, try to place it in the shade to avoid rain. Then make a wooden tub from boards 1 meter wide and 1.5 meters long. Use wooden planks 30-40 cm wide.
  2. Prepare organic material that will be used as compost, you can add manure to make compost much better. Grind all the ingredients, but not too finely because it will affect the results of aeration during composting.
  3. Slowly put the ingredients into the wooden tub that was made before. Compact and then fill the entire wooden tub to the brim. Spray water on a pile of organic material to provide moisture. The composting process can be accelerated by providing a starter of decomposing microorganisms.
  4. After it is solid, raise the wooden plank tub higher until the compost is about 1.5 meters high. Leave the compost pile for 2-4 days so it can kill pathogenic bacteria, fungi and weeds, compost temperature can reach 65o
  5. On the 4th day, lower the temperature to maintain humidity by turning the compost over, then flush the compost with water. Use a tarpaulin to protect from rain.
  6. Turn the compost by lifting the wooden tub from the compost pile. Then place it beside the compost pile, then move the top part of the compost into the previous wooden tub while the compost is stirred.
  7. The turning process will be better if it is done once every 3 days until the composting process is complete. The temperature is stable below 45oC, the color of the compost is black-brown and the volume shrinks by up to 50%, so the reversal process is complete, just waiting for the maturation process which can last for 14 days.
  8. In general, compost can be harvested after 40-50 days of age, but it all depends on the condition of the decomposer and the compost raw materials used. Ripe compost will be black-brown in color, loose in texture, and odorless.

 

 Making Compost Anaerobic Method

 
In contrast to aerobic composting, composting using the anaerobic method is carried out without the help of oxygen.


This process requires microorganisms to decompose such as effective microorganism 4 (EM4), but you can use similar products such as superbio, probio, and others.


Materials needed in the manufacture of compost, namely high C and N elements> 30:1. Other composition: sawdust, rice husk and goat manure.


The time required is relatively short, namely 4-10 days. The optimal temperature for the composting process is 35-45oC with 30-40% humidity.

For those of you who are interested in making it, here are the steps for making compost using an anaerobic process:

  1. Use organic materials to be composted such as plant or animal waste, plant forages, tofu dregs, household organic waste, chicken manure, goat manure, and others. Puree all these ingredients, the finer the better.
  2. Use the decomposer (EM4) as a starter or other types of microorganisms. Mix 1 cc of EM4 into 1 liter of water, then add 1 gram of sugar as a growing medium, let stand for 1 day.
  3. Store the organic material that has been mashed on the tarpaulin, then mix the sawdust in the material with a ratio of C and N. Spray the diluted EM4 and stir until evenly distributed, keeping the humidity around 30-40%.
  4. Use drums, plastic barrels or airtight tools, then add the mixed organic matter and close tightly. The fermentation process can last for only 4 days but for the best time, you can count for 7 days or 10 days. The temperature during fermentation ranges from 35-45o. When the compost is ripe, it can be characterized by a fragrant smell, like the smell of tape.
